The park includes a baseball diamond and soccer field. Van Voorst Park is one of the Park District's pesticide free parks, the other being Marjorie Davis Park.

Adjacent to Jefferson School the park, previously named Jefferson Park, was renamed for the former elementary principal and long-time resident Jack Van Voorst in May 1979.
