Program Description

Welcome to the EPD gymnastics program. Gymnastics classes at the Elmhurst Park District Wagner Community Center, are a fun way for children to learn basic gymnastic skills under the supervision of trained professionals. Gymnastics is a great sport to improve strength, balance, and flexibility.

Meteorites Gymnastics

Meteorites programs introduce children ages 18 months to 4 years to gymnastics through song, dance, and group activities with an adult. Your instructor will guide you and your tot basic gymnastic movements while encouraging each child to try activities and actions. Children will build self-confidence, gross motor skills, balance and a sense of accomplishment while learning to follow direction. Throughout the year, Meteorites classes are offered such as:

   Metorites I (Ages Walking – 18 months)
   Metorites II (Ages 18 – 36 months)

Pre-School Gymnastics

Our pre-school programs are tons of fun for the young gymnast! Running, skipping, hopping, jumping, Tumble Trak, and equipment will keep your child learning and moving! Basics on beam and bars with emphasis on tumbling and motor skills make this program a great choice for overall coordination, body awareness and learning while having fun! Children participate in classes without parent. Throughout the year, various Pre-School Gymnastics classes are offered such as:

Asteroids

This preschool gymnastics program for children ages 3-4 years old is designed for children who are able to separate from their parents and enjoy the independence of learning gymnastics skills under the direction of an instructor. Traditional gymnastics equipment has been modified to meet the needs of the young gymnast. Obstacle courses are used to teach basic skills, and allow experimentation with new found capabilities to build coordination necessary for future physical and academic activities.

Twinkle Stars

This preschool gymnastics program for children ages 4-7 years old is designed so every child can safely learn proper progressions while having fun and developing at their own rate. Children will be introduced to gymnastics equipment as they learn skills while developing motor skills, coordination, flexibility and strength.

Recreational Gymnastics

The Elmhurst Park District offers a multi-level skill progressive recreational program for boys and girls. Participants progress through levels as they achieve selected skills on gymnastics classes that are beneficial for children of all ages. Gymnastics is a fun and challenging total fitness program that can enhance your child’s athletic ability. Your child will be engaged in activities that develop balance, coordination, strength, spatial awareness, flexibility and confidence. Grouped by age and ability, these students follow USAG skill progressions to help maximize their learning experience. Participants will develop skills on the four women’s Olympic events and six men’s Olympic events as well as Tumble Trak. Throughout the year, various Recreational Gymnastics classes are offered such as:

Shooting Stars

This program for children ages 5-7 years old will explore the basic skills of gymnastics and gymnastic terms and skills such as listening and following directions. Development of gymnastics skills in tumbling as well as apparatus will be emphasized while improving strength, coordination, flexibility and agility.

Rising Stars

This program for children ages 5-8 years old is designed to help participants move from our pre-school program to our recreational program in a fun yet safe environment. Participants should be able to perform a handstand against a wall and a cartwheel. Participants must have instructor approval and must have participated in Shooting Stars prior to enrollment.

Comets

This program for children ages 8-10 years old is a great class to introduce the sport of gymnastics to your child while improving strength, flexibility, and overall confidence. Emphasis will be placed on the progression of motor skills and the introduction of basic skills on all Olympic events. No previous experience is necessary and each child will progress at their own rate.

Super Stars

This program for children ages 6 and older, explores more challenging gymnastic skills. This class not only incorporates the basic and advanced skills of gymnastics but develops muscle strength, endurance, flexibility, balance and control. An emphasis will be placed on technique and form. Participants must be able to perform a one-arm cartwheel, round-off and handstand.

Boys’ 4/5/6 Gymnastics

This program for boys’ ages 4-6 years old is full of swinging, climbing, jumping and building confidence. Beginner gymnasts will be introduced to all six Olympic men’s events; rings, high bar, parallel bars, pommel horse, vault and floor as well as develop basic gymnastic skills as they gain strength, flexibility coordination and agility.

Silver Stars – Boys Gymnastics

This program is for boys ages 6 and older with no prior gymnastic experience. Gymnasts will work on tumbling, pommel horse, rings, high bar, parallel bars, vault and floor. Boys will develop basic gymnastics skills as they gain strength, flexibility and self esteem.

Flip Stars – Boys Gymnastics

This program for boys ages 6 and older is for intermediate gymnasts who exhibit self-discipline and mastery of basic gymnastic skills. Gymnasts will continue to develop skills on all Olympic events as well as tumbling. Participants must have instructor approval prior to enrollment.

Boys & Girls Dynamites

This school year round program follows USAG and IHSA guidelines and competes in the Greater Illinois Junior Olympic (GIJO) leagues. Gymnasts interested in joining a Dynamites Team are invited to attend a tryout on Saturday, August 21 from 9-10:30 a.m. at the Wagner Community Center. Once tryouts are completed, participants will be contacted with a placement in Dynamites Team, Dynamites Pre Team, or a suitable class. Registration is required. Private & Semi Private Gymnastic Lessons

Private and semi-private gymnastics/tumbling lessons are available for students ages 4 and older who are currently enrolled in gymnastic classes but are looking for additional one-on-one instruction. Private lessons are especially effective when a student is trying to master a new skill. Private lessons are for ½ hour or 1 hour and must be prearranged. Preschool Open Gym

Understanding that kids just want a chance to play, learn and grow, we offer an open gym for children ages 18 months to 6 years that encourages healthy, active play, just for the fun of it! Your little one will enjoy jumping on our Tumble Trac, walking on balance beams, hanging on bars, ropes and rings, climbing in out and around squishy mats, and a wide variety of gymnastic equipment. An adult must accompany children at all times.

The fee per child is $5 per visit payable at the Wagner Community Center registration desk. Gymnastics Open Gym punch cards are available for purchase for $25 at the Wagner Community Center. Each punch card is valued for 6 visits.

Open Gym

Open Gymnastics gives gymnasts ages 6 years and older the opportunity to practice specific skills and enjoy the gymnastic facility. This is a great opportunity for friends to get together. This is not and instructional class. Qualified gymnastic instructors are on duty to supervise the safety of open gymnastic participants. An adult parent/guardian MUST complete and sign a waiver for children under the age of 18 BEFORE they will be permitted to participate.

The fee per child is $5 per visit payable at the Wagner Community Center registration desk. Gymnastics Open Gym punch cards are available for purchase for $25 at the Wagner Community Center. Each punch card is valued for 6 visits.

Gymnastic Birthday Parties

Parties are available September through early June on Saturdays from 1–2:30 p.m., 2–3:30 p.m. and 3–4:30 p.m. depending on facility and staff availability. The party packages involves one hour of activities and free time on various age appropriate equipment and one-half hour in a multi-purpose room for parent run activities. The fee is $125 (up to 10 children). A $50 deposit is required to secure a reservation. For parties greater than 10 children, the fee is $10 per child with a limit of 25 children. The balance is due the day of the party once a final count has been taken. An additional $25 charge per quarter hour will be applied to all parties that exceed the allotted time. All participants must sign a waiver by a parent or legal guardian before being allowed to participate. All waivers are due the day of the party.

Gymnastics General Information

  • All classes are held at the Wagner Community Center.


  • For the safety of all concerned, anyone who is not participating in a class (i.e. siblings, friends, parents, etc.) is not allowed in the gym. A parent observation day will be scheduled for the last week of classes so that you may see all of the skills your child has learned.


  • All non-participants are asked to remain in the lobby area until class is completed.


  • Please remove shoes prior to entering the equipment area.


  • For safety and comfort, participants are requested to dress in the following attire:

              Girls: gymnastics leotard or shorts and t-shirt (no tights).
              Boys: shorts or sweatpants and t-shirt.

    Bare feet or form fitting clothing, clothing with buttons, zippers and/or snaps are unacceptable as they present a safety hazard for both participants and instructors.


  • Long hair must be pulled back into a ponytail.


  • Participants are not allowed to chew gum, nor is food or drink allowed in the gymnastics center.


  • Participants must remain off the equipment and floor mat until it is their class time.
