The land was acquired in 1963 through 1965, and developed in 1966. The Armitage Avenue park was renamed Helmut Berens Park, founder of the Elmhurst Historical Commission and local author/historian, in 1967. Other parcels of land were purchased from 1976-1978. The current size of the park is 62 acres.
