Elmhurst Park District recognized as an Illinois Distinguished Accredited Agency

Elmhurst Park District has been recognized as an Illinois Distinguished Accredited Agency by the Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD) and the Illinois Park and Recreation Association (IPRA). The two statewide associations administer the Illinois Distinguished Accreditation program with the goal of improving the delivery of park and recreation services to Illinois residents. The Park District is one of only 39 accredited park districts in Illinois out of more than 350 total park districts.

“This program gives recognition to park and recreation agencies, and forest preserve districts that demonstrate a strong commitment to providing exceptional programs, services, and facilities that enrich the lives of their communities and residents,” said Suzi Wirtz, IPRA Executive Director.

Park and recreation agencies undergo a detailed, lengthy process of application and evaluation to receive accreditation. A Joint Distinguished Park and Recreation Accreditation Committee (JDPRAC) comprised of members from IAPD and IPRA coordinates the process.

On the day of the evaluation, the agency presents documented information and gives a tour of pertinent facilities and parks for the evaluation team’s review.

The committee performs an extensive review of general management procedures, finance and business operations, facilities and parks, personnel, recreation services, legal documentation and other materials including mission statements, goals, and safety manuals.

Elmhurst Park District was evaluated on Wednesday, October 29. The Park District not only met but significantly surpassed the accreditation standards. The evaluation committee particularly noted the excellence of the Park District's staff, operations, and its diverse range of high-quality services as standout features.

"By dedicating the time and effort to go through the review and compilation of materials, as well as the evaluation process, the Elmhurst Park District has shown a commitment to meeting the highest standards of our profession," remarked Evaluation Team Leader Jan Arnold.

On Monday, November 17, the District was officially approved for Distinguished Accredited status. In January of next year, the Park District will be formally recognized at the annual IAPD/IPRA conference.

“I congratulate our staff for their efforts in working toward this achievement. The accreditation reflects what our staff does each day to live up to our values and mission," said Executive Director Jim Rogers.
