Senior Resources During COVID-19: Elmhurst Park District has compiled a list of phone numbers, websites & emails that may be useful for seniors & caregivers during the shelter at home order.


Online Chair Yoga and T'ai Chi available

Chair Yoga - Join instructor, Colleen Koziara for weekly live Chair Yoga sessions online through Zoom. Get the full benefit of yoga modified for those with osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and back injuries. Class focuses on improved breathing; posture and core strength; joint flexibility and range of motion. Class meets on Tuesdays at 2:30 p.m. No need to register and payment for yoga classes is by donation only, as you are able.  If you are not able to pay anything at this time, that is just fine.

T'ai Chi - Join our T'ai Chi for Health instructor for weekly live sessions online. This exercise routine is energizing and deeply relaxing, with movements done naturally and gently. Students may choose to sit or stand.

Online Art Classes available

Art classes are being offered online by Marie Strauch. There is a small fee for each class of just $8. Classes may be paid for individually, or if you think you'd like to join in on several classes, you may do that at once (for example 5 classes would be $40). Register by emailing strauchartschool [at] gmail.com.

Payment options are through QuickPay (Zelle) online bank transfer using strauchartschool [at] gmail.com or mailing a check made out to Strauch Art School to 320 N. Myrtle Ave., Elmhurst, IL 60126.

During each class, there will be time for you to view an art demo, work on your art piece, ask questions, get feedback, and share what you may have been working on. All in the comfort of your home!

Here’s the schedule for the next week. Please have your supplies ready and log on to your computer, tablet, or phone a few minutes before the meeting time so that we can enter the meeting and all try to start as soon as possible. If you are unable to start at our start time, no worries. Just join in when you are able. I won’t text reminders, so please put these times in your calendar. I hope to see you for one or both sessions!

Tuesday 5/19 12:45 p.m. Small Twig Drawing- You will need: A small twig with 5-11 leaves, sketchbook, 2H HB & 2B pencils, eraser, tortillon,(you may choose to work in colored pencil).

Friday 5/22 10:00 a.m. Watercolor Painting: Impressionist Flower Garden- You will need: 9x12 stretched 140# watercolor paper (make sure you stretch your watercolor paper at least 2 hrs. prior to our class meeting), watercolors, brushes, water container, paper towel or rag.


Our Brain Game program has packets available online of brain teasers to do at home. Keep your brain and cognition healthy with these fun activities! A great opportunity to flex your mental muscles as you play games using logic, music, words, math and more! Answers are included.


AARP Programs (including Tax Prep appointments & Safe Driver programs) suspended at The Abbey, tax prep services available online

AARP is now offering free online options for tax preparation. All in-person classes and tax preparation services have been suspended indefinitely during the COVID-19 crisis. Unfortunately, The Abbey will not be able to make up missed appointments at this time, as AARP is not re-instating this program during the pandemic.

The Abbey was established for active, older, fun-loving adults in the community. In addition to providing a variety of exciting leisure activities, The Abbey, located at 407 W. St. Charles Rd., Elmhurst, provides social service programs such as income tax preparation, informal seminars, driver safety programs, and more. A wide variety of classes, parties, day trips and clubs are offered to encourage friendship & socialization.

An Abbey membership ensures “lifetime enjoyment”’ with recreational programs and opportunities meeting the social and educational interests of adults aged 62 and older. Membership benefits include having the Abbey Newsletter mailed to your home and being able to register for Abbey programs over the phone. In addition, Abbey members receive $5 off monthly luncheon fees and can participate in the Bingo program at no charge.

Abbey Membership dues for 2020 are $25 for residents, and $35 for non-residents.
