The Berens Park tennis courts bounced back into action this month and we’re celebrating with a ribbon cutting! Join Elmhurst Park District on Friday, September 18 at 6pm to commemorate the redevelopment of the courts.
A popular destination for tennis users of all ages and abilities, the park’s twelve courts host York High School tennis, Courts Plus programs, USTA matches and local recreational play.
The courts had been showing significant wear and age. Stop-gap measures in 2004 and 2017 helped extend the use of the courts, but the frequency of use, existing conditions and weather necessitated the courts being demolished and reconstructed.
Featuring a new color scheme, new equipment and new fencing, tennis players were welcomed back in early September. Players and visitors will also notice a few other facility features which were updated during construction. A new lighting system was installed, replacing lights that were more than 25 years old. The light poles were relocated to outside the court fence line, eliminating a potential safety issue.
Also updated was the central promenade area around the courts, which gained two new shade structures to provide more comfortable viewing areas during matches. New benches and bleachers were also installed.
With work now completed, the Park District looks forward to tennis players checking out the new courts, which will provide opportunities for recreation, connection, and having fun for years to come.
