The Elmhurst Park District’s lifeguard team received top marks during their first unannounced visit of the year from StarGuard Elite, the Park District’s partner in lifeguard training and aquatic risk prevention. Last month, lifeguards at East End Pool earned a coveted five-star rating on their audit, the highest score possible.
“Our guards consistently earn five-star ratings on our audits, and that’s no accident — it’s the result of the high expectations we have when it comes to hiring, training, and daily performance,” said Sarah Lagesse, Director of Recreation. “Our guards take safety seriously and work hard to stay sharp and prepared, and I’m incredibly proud of the entire staff!”
StarGuard Elite performs the unannounced audits throughout the summer. They assess facilities on a broad set of criteria, including unannounced observations of lifeguards and supervisors, skill scenario evaluations, documentation reviews, and facility inspections.
Receiving a five-star rating is no small achievement. It reflects the dedication, professionalism, and rigorous training the Aquatics staff undergoes to ensure safety remains the top priority.
Safety starts with training. Each year, lifeguard staff complete a 25-hour training program covering everything from water rescues and emergency procedures to community CPR. In addition, guards participate in weekly in-service trainings and surprise simulation drills to stay sharp and prepared.
As a testament to their commitment to excellence, the Aquatics staff was honored with an Elite Safety Award from StarGuard Elite this spring. This is the inaugural year for the award, which recognizes aquatic organizations around the world that consistently excel in promoting a strong culture of safety and innovation. Elmhurst was the only agency in the Chicagoland area to receive the award.
As summer progresses, the community can anticipate a safe and enjoyable season at the pools, thanks to the dedication and efforts of the Aquatics staff.
