Elmhurst Park District Board members and staff commemorated the newly redeveloped Berens Park tennis courts with a ribbon cutting last Friday, September 18. After wrapping up their team practice, the York Community High School Girl’s Tennis Team also joined in the celebration.
The courts were under construction during the summer and reopened in early September. Considerable signs of wear and aging had necessitated the project. Temporary fixes in 2004 and 2017 extended the use of the courts, but due to multiple factors, including high frequency of play and weather exposure, staff determined the courts needed to be demolished and rebuilt.
The new tennis courts have a fresh color scheme, new equipment, and new fencing. Players will also notice several enhancements to the courts. A modern lighting system was installed, replacing fixtures that were over 25 years old. The light poles were relocated outside the court fence line, addressing a potential safety concern.
The central promenade area between the courts also saw updates. It features two new shade structures, enhancing comfort for spectators during matches. New benches and bleachers were also installed to improve the viewing experience.
During remarks prior to the ribbon cutting Executive Director Jim Rogers mentioned that, “These new tennis courts are just another example of the Park Board and District’s continuing commitment to provide Invigorated Parks throughout the community as demonstrated by the District having invested nearly $2.4 million dollars over the past two years in enhancements here at Berens Park, the community’s most active park.”
Tennis players are invited to check out the new courts, which will offer chances for recreation, connection, and enjoyment for many years ahead.
