Staff preparing for summer days with sand volleyball court updates

  • Staff installing a permanent edge to the sand courts

Sand volleyball fans will notice a small change when they stop by the Berens Park sand volleyball courts this spring. Staff hopes the updates will help keep sand where it’s supposed to be and improve the grass area surrounding the courts.

The courts are used throughout the warmer months for District leagues, summer camps and general recreational play. Sand is replenished each year to maintain good playing conditions, but over time the sand tends to move off the courts and onto the surrounding grass. This leads to maintenance difficulties and unattractive conditions.

Staff is tackling this issue by installing a permanent edge to the sand courts. This will help keep the sand where it’s supposed to be and allow grass around the border to thrive. The edges are going to be regraded and the permanent border installed. Following this, additional sand will arrive and the turf around the courts will be restored.

The courts will be ready to go well before summer, ensuring volleyball fans have a whole season of sunny, sandy days ahead.
