For more than 30 years, Angela Ferrentino has been a familiar and trusted face at the Park District. Someone who proudly introduces herself as “Angela from the Park District” and truly means it. Her career is a testament to dedication, growth, and a deep commitment to community.
Angela’s journey began with a clear purpose. With a degree in Therapeutic Recreation, she was inspired by the idea of helping people and being part of a community. Her early motivation centered on inclusion, creating recreation opportunities where individuals of all abilities, including those with special needs, could feel welcomed, valued, and have a sense of belonging. She was also driven to educate others about the importance of inclusion and embracing differences, a value that has guided her entire career.
In 1994 Angela joined Elmhurst Park District as a part-time Program Coordinator at Rec Station. From there, she eagerly took on new opportunities, from helping with special events to coordinating summer camps - even chaperoning teen trips like overnight ski adventures. These early experiences set the foundation for a career marked by curiosity, hard work, and a willingness to jump in wherever she was needed.
Over the years, Angela’s career has spanned numerous departments and leadership roles. She served as Program Manager overseeing Inclusion, Registration, Aquatics, and Gymnastics; Division Manager of Facilities; Director of Parks and Facilities; and Director of Facilities. In January 2025, she stepped into her current role as Director of Referendum Project Construction, taking on complex, high-impact projects that will shape the future of the Park District.
One of Angela’s biggest leadership challenges came when she transitioned into facilities management. Adjusting to working closely with the trades, planning projects, and motivating teams required flexibility and adaptability. No two days were ever the same and plans could change overnight based on emergencies. However, it was that unpredictability that also made it one of her most rewarding roles. Despite the challenge, it remains her favorite position to date.
When reflecting on what makes her most proud, Angela points to the heart of the Park District’s mission: enriching lives. Whether through programs, parks, or facilities, she takes pride in knowing the Park District creates opportunities and becomes part of residents’ cherished memories. The relationships she’s built with community members and the children she’s watched grow up over the years, continue to motivate her.
Among her many accomplishments, Angela is especially proud to be managing the Referendum projects. She feels grateful for the trust placed in her and confident in taking on the challenge. Another standout achievement was managing the rebuilding of East End Pool, her first major project. That experience taught her valuable lessons in community input, design development, and project management. It was made even more meaningful with the support of a great mentor, current Park District Executive Director, Jim Rogers.
Over her 30 years with the Park District, there have been many memorable moments. One favorite still brings a smile to her face: the year it snowed nearly four inches on the morning of the Easter Egg Hunt. Instead of canceling, the team got creative! They invited Santa to join the Easter Bunny. The kids loved it, and the unexpected combination made the day unforgettable.
When asked what advice she’d give to someone starting out in parks and recreation, Angela keeps it simple and sincere: work hard, care about your work, and ask to be involved in new things.
Angela’s story continues to be one of growth, passion, and community impact. Her pride in the Park District - and the Park District’s pride in her - are unmistakable. Congratulations, Angela, on three decades (and counting) of making a difference.
