In a significant step toward addressing community needs, the Elmhurst Board of Park Commissioners reviewed the findings of a comprehensive voter survey at their meeting last night. The survey, which far exceeded the goal of 500 responses, highlighted the high level of engagement and interest among Elmhurst residents in the proposed projects.
The board discussed the survey results and weighed the advantages and potential challenges of proceeding with asking the community to fund these critical initiatives. Commissioner Carolyn Ubriaco emphasized the importance of addressing the community's needs, stating, "There's a downside in not pursuing this. We have been made aware that these are significant needs that aren’t being met. We’ve done the homework to find out what it would take to satisfy those needs. Following through is good governance."
The next crucial step in this process involves the Park Board gathering a recommended direction on next steps from the Elevate Advisory Committee, which is set to meet on Wednesday, July 24. This Committee, comprised of nearly 20 members from various community organizations, local businesses, and diverse demographics, has played an instrumental role in reviewing the community’s priorities and proposed plans. Their invaluable feedback has already led to revisions in the plans, ensuring alignment with the community’s needs and aspirations.
Following the Advisory Committee’s meeting, the Park Board plans to hold a special meeting on Monday, July 29 at 7 pm at the District’s Administrative Office at 375 W 1st St., to hear their feedback and recommendations. The voter survey results, along with insights from the Elevate Advisory Committee, will be critical in helping the Park Board determine the next steps in the District’s planning process. This includes the decision on whether to place a referendum question on the November 5 election ballot, allowing voters to decide on funding the proposed projects.
The deadline for the Park Board to pass this resolution is August 19, underscoring the urgency and importance of these discussions. The Elmhurst Park District remains committed to transparency and community involvement, ensuring that the proposed initiatives reflect the collective vision and needs of Elmhurst residents.
