Adjacent to Jefferson School, Jefferson Park was renamed May 19, 1979 for the former elementary principal and long-time resident Jack Van Voorst. With a baseball diamond, picnic table, soccer field, and traffic from Jefferson School, Van Voorst sees a lot of use. The park has long been a popular spot for soccer practices.
Following discussions with the Elmhurst Cool Cities Coalition, the Midwest Pesticide Action Center, and Parks Division staff the Elmhurst Park District has selected Van Voorst Park as a pesticide free park test site. The park was selected due to its amenities and adjacent location to Jefferson School. During the trial run, staff will continue all regular park maintenance items. As with all natural areas, the elimination of pesticide may cause a slight increase in weeds within the turf, but park staff will continue to be vigilant in mowing and weed removal.
