Congratulations to Elmhurst Park District Commissioners Carolyn Ubriaco and Meghan Scarsella for completing the 2024 Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD) Leadership Institute.

According to the IAPD, this unique educational series is designed to enhance the personal growth and professional development of those holding leadership and governance roles within park districts, forest preserves, conservation, recreation and special recreation agencies.

For Commissioner Scarsella, the Leadership Institute offered a way to build practical strategies for communicating with residents.

“The IAPD Leadership Institute was a valuable opportunity to further develop my leadership and communication skills, while connecting with commissioners from other local park districts,” said Commissioner Scarsella.

The importance of community service was part of what motivated Commissioner Scarsella to run for the Park Board in 2021. She also wanted to contribute to the Park District’s future, having been inspired by the role the Park District played in her own life when she moved to Elmhurst 14 years ago.

“I was pregnant with our oldest daughter and not having grown up here, we really didn’t know anyone. The Elmhurst Park District played a significant role in making this community our home. We have met so many of our friends in town though park district programs and activities.”

As a community volunteer, Commissioner Ubriaco, a Park Board Member since 2003, was inspired to run for the Park Board.

“I worked closely with the Elmhurst Park District on the Elmhurst Garden Walk & Faire, establishing the current Wilder Park Herb Garden and other community events. I ran for Park Board to work with a great staff to make Elmhurst Park District even better and protect our heritage of open space and opportunities to play, grow and make friends.”

The opportunity to talk through real world scenarios with other commissioners and recreation professionals was something Commissioner Ubriaco appreciated during the Leadership Institute.

“The IAPD Leadership Institute helps Illinois recreation agencies make the most of our most powerful asset – our people,” said Commissioner Ubriaco.

Board members with advanced leadership abilities bring significant value to their organizations and the people they serve. Congratulations to both Commissioners!
