Heading into the summer season, the Park District is looking forward to implementing its upgraded lightning detection system, Perry Weather, which will help keep visitors safe and ensure staff are informed.
A new system feature is an app allowing users to quickly check their cellphones for weather conditions at Park District locations where Perry Weather is operating.
Perry Weather uses a national detection network to ensure accurate alerts based on confirmed strikes. When a strike is detected, the system triggers sirens at the affected park and sends mobile alerts to staff, keeping them up-to-date.
Perry Weather lightning detection systems are located at:
- Berens Park
- Butterfield Park
- Canine Corner
- Eldridge Park
- Plunkett Park
- Sugar Creek Golf Course
When visiting one of these locations, park-goers can scan the QR code on the posted Perry Weather signs to get live updates on weather conditions. These weather updates are also available to view on each individual park and facility webpage and at epd.org/lightning-detection, where you can also learn more about the detection system.
The public can also sign up for Rainout Line, the Park District’s weather cancellation service, for weather delay information related to programs and events. Receive updates by text, email, the Rainout Line App or at the Rainout Line website.
