You may notice some new additions to the park landscape this fall. This week, tree plantings took place across ten different parks and featured 21 different species.
The Park District plants trees annually to maintain the Park District's collection and replace trees that have perished due to plant pathogens, age or damage.
Planting in the fall gives the trees time to develop roots during the winter before energy must be used for the leaf canopy. Fall planting also helps preserve Park District resources because less watering is required.
Trees broaden the beauty of the parks while providing shade, but they also can serve other purposes. For example, this year's plantings included a mass planting of arborvitae at Crestview Park, which was installed to help mitigate noise from the courts and improve the park experience for all park-goers.
