Surfacing project at The Hub tent area completed

The Hub tent area at Berens Park was recently revitalized by the Parks Department, with new plants and surfacing installed this October.

The space, located directly south of the Lee A. Daniels Pavilions, is a popular spot for birthday party groups and rentals. Regular maintenance is needed to ensure the outdoor amenity is a comfortable and relaxing place for the community, but this project also improved the area, creating a more welcoming spot for partygoers and park visitors.

The work included planting new beds to the east and west of the tent, which are now filled with ornamental trees, shrubs and grasses. A timber border was also installed, defining the picnic area.

The area was previously surfaced with mulch, which drained poorly and created an uneven surface for patrons with mobility issues. It also required significant maintenance, including weeding, grading and twice annually re-mulching. Now, it has a decomposed granite surface. This surface is smooth and level, provides better drainage and requires less upkeep.

With its proximity to fun at The Hub and the return of the tent canopy in spring 2022, this rejuvenated area will continue to be a great spot for outdoor gatherings in the community.
